Things You Should Know Before Coloring Your Hair

If you’re a hair color virgin then coloring your hair for the first time can be terrifying and exciting all at once. A lot of girls are very particular when it comes to their hair and why not? After all, it’s our mane that puts the entire look together. And if by any chance you manage to ruin them then you have no option but to live with your mistake or go back to your virgin hair color which you wanted to change in the first place. In any case, it’s your loss. So, before taking your leap of faith there are certain things you must know before coloring your hair.

Things You Must Know Before Coloring Your Hair

Do your research as to which color or technique you want

This is one of the most important things you must know before coloring your hair. Don’t just go for a color/technique just because it sounds fancy or it worked for your friend. A Blonde Balayage might look fabulous on your friends but that does not mean that it’ll look equally good on you.  Instagram is your best friend in this research as almost every colorist have their own Instagram pages where they post before-and-after photos that can help you make a better decision.

Always go for a consultation before booking your actual appointment

It’s imperative to be on the same page with your hair stylist in terms of what you want, his charges, procedure, time duration and many other things depending on different factors. A consultation is always a good idea because it gives you time to discuss and decide on the look, shade, and technique beforehand.

Bring photos of your inspiration but have realistic expectations

If you have an inspiration then its always a good idea to bring a picture as it leads to a better understanding. But, one thing you must know before coloring your hair is that it’s not always possible to achieve exactly what you’re looking for. Your stylist might use the same color and technique as you want but there’s always a possibility that it will not turn out the way you want it to on your hair. It’s very important to understand that we all have different hair types and what might work on others might not work on you. So, don’t be disheartened if your hair doesn’t turn out to be exactly like your inspiration and always have realistic expectations.

Maintenance of color treated hair is the key

If you think your job is done after you step out of the salon then, you’re gravely mistaken, my friend. After the stylist has done his job, it’s your responsibility to manage and care for your new hair.  For starters, you would have to change your shampoo to the ones specially made for color-treated hair as shampoos that you’d normally use, will strip away your new color. Its also equally important to preserve your new hair from the sun as it will accelerate the fading process.

You will need to get touch ups done

This is one of the most important things you must know before coloring your hair. Getting your hair color done is not a one time job, you would have to come for your touch ups after some intervals of time if you want to maintain the exact color you got. Otherwise, your color will fade and it can look nasty if you don’t go in for your touch ups. Fading is inevitable, and since hair grows about 1/2 inch every month, you’ll at least have to get your roots redone every 6-8 weeks, depending on what look you’re going for. But, if you don’t have the time or money for touch ups then you should probably go for shades that are closer to your natural hair color.

Happy Coloring!
